![]() ![]() They could study the live-action footage carefully to see exactly how the light should look, exactly how the water should run off the pirates’ bodies, exactly how they should shift their weight while stepping into sand as they became CG figures instead of actors in suits. That worked a lot better than trying to animate a CG group from scratch because the FX crew, which later CG-ized each actor into a barnacle-encrusted pirate monstrosity, had tremendously helpful details to work with. Knoll and company achieved it by first putting real actors in sensor-studded outfits right there in the water on a real beach, in the crazy-beautiful Exuma Islands of the Bahamas. The shot looks as photorealistic as an island-vacation commercial - a breathtaking step forward in CG imagery. For instance, there’s a shot of the Flying Dutchman pirate crew coming out of the milky-blue Caribbean waters to charge after Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, who are in the midst of a swordfight on a white-sand beach. If anything, I'd say Davy Jones feels like a real person, most movies fail to capture that with their villains.Working on stunning-looking locations instead of dull bluescreen stages also made the action choreography much more dynamic. Without his heart he doesn't really feel anymore so all that's left is rage. But we also see's that this sadistic side comes from a lot of pain. Besides that, pretty much everything he does has some level fo justification.ĭon't get me wrong, he's definitely not a good guy, and he definitely revels in causing pain and cruelty. In both movies he's in the only truly despicable thing he does is sending the kraken to attack a ship of sailors who's only crime was being unlucky enough to pick up Will Turner at sea. He only took Will as part of Jack's revised deal and went after Jack the pearl to protect his heart. A deal that Bootstrap made of his own vollition and very much knew the consequences of. He's only against Will because he wants to free his Father from service and stole the key to his heart to do it. He's only against Jack because Jack tried to go back on his deal. Now all he really does is provide a way out for people who are about to face their final judgement which is honestly a good thing. He started out doing a job for Calypso who soon betrayed him. He's only the bad guy because he opposes out protagonists. I mean, he is but he's actually very reasonable. Blows my mind how long stuff can be around on these subsīecause he's not really that bad of a guy. Tldr: Davy Jones is appealing as he is at his core still a relatable human being and a bunch of nonsense that I ranted about.Įdit: Wow, I forgot I posted this and apparently people are still reading it. Which shows that the curse naturally changes and corrupts your mind, no matter who you are, though we don't know if that's permanent as we haven't seen enough of Will post curse to make a fair decision, but I would assume not as he immediately went to Elizabeth, which doesn't seem very much distant to me, but what do I know? (You are now entering my nonsense rant about lore and stuff, you've been warned) We see that after Will Turner takes Jones' place and his son returns to see him in dead men tell no tales that even Will seems distant and bitter. He still loves and longs for Calypso, but he cuts himself off from that part of himself because it hurts too much, just like we do sometimes. He thinks and acts like us, even if it's twisted by his cursed state of mind and self inflicted seclusion. I feel like he is a novel character because in the end, we can still tell that he's human.
